Alok Kejriwal — Winner of BBLF CK Prahalad Best Business Book Award 2019

No one expected the second BBLF CK Prahalad Best Business Book Award 2019 to be this close. Alok Kejriwal of the Games2Win fame, author of ‘Why I Stopped Wearing My Socks’, beat former corporate honcho R Gopalakrishnan’s book, ‘The Made in India Manager’, by a whisker. The winner scored 20.5 points, 0.5 points more than the closest competitor, out of a maximum of 30 points.

If only the reader-rating and reviews in popular book-selling portals were taken into account, Alok would have won hands down. That’s why the BBLF’s home-grown model tries to balance popular and critical reviews to ensure personal popularity and marketing prowess don’t have undue influence on the result.

BBLF picked five books published during the 2018 calendar year out of a shortlist of 25 based on highest reader rating and reviews and subjected them to two more criteria — originality of the idea and impact of the book on the target audience.

The fact that Alok’s book met all three criteria shows how compelling the book is.

A 3-man jury was entrusted with the task of rating the five books based on the above criteria. The jury comprised Prof. Rishikesha Krishnan, Professor of Strategy at IIM Bangalore, Harish Bijoor, Branding Guru and K Giriprakash, senior journalist with The Hindu Businessline. Research firm Kantar IMRB validated the award process.

Nistha Tripathi’s ‘No Shortcuts: Rare Insights from 15 Successful Start-up Founders’ came a close third with 19.3 points. Following close on the heels were Manbir Kaur and Kathy Mitchell’s ‘Are You the Leader You Want to Be’ and standup-comedian entrepreneur Karthik Kumar’s ‘Don’t Start-up: What No One Tells You About Starting Your Own Business’.

Mr. Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, will hand over the ‘BBLF CK Prahalad Best Business Book Award 2019’ during the 5th Bangalore Business Literature Festival on 7 September 2019 at WeWork Galaxy. The whole day fest has seven sessions and more than 20 author-leader speakers. Since 2015, the BBLF has hosted more than 60 author-leaders.

The unique award launched in 2018, with a cash prize of Rs. One Lakh, is one of its kind in India. The prize money is sponsored by the family of late Professor C K Prahalad, a global management legend, between 1980 and 2010.

The 2018 award was won by Subroto Bagchi, co-founder of MindTree for his book ‘Sell — the Art, the Science and Witchcraft’.
